Selfie shoes for graduates
On April 1, school board ‘OK’d’ stylish gift for seniors
The Perrysburg Senior class can “take the road less traveled” in style this year at graduation.
“Every Perrysburg senior at Perrysburg High School will receive a free pair of selfie shoes alongside their diplomas,” fashion-forward Superintendent Tom Hosler announced at a special board meeting on April 1 ( April Fools’ Day).
“The fact is, we have a good-looking senior class,” said Mr. Hosler in justification of his decision. “They need to take as many pictures as possible of themselves before things go downhill. You only live once.”
“It just seems like the right thing to do,” added Principal Dr. Michael Short. “We want each of our graduates to put their best foot forward.”
“A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step,” remarked assistant principal Dave Boyce.
The announcement was not without controversy, however.
“I think selfie shoes are a fabulous idea,” said Kellie Johnson, an assistant principal new to Perrysburg this year, “and they’re super cute. I just have concerns about students snapping pictures while walking. Our seniors need to watch where they’re going.”
Snapping refers to the use of Snapchat, a photo-sharing app with dangerous consequences when users attempt motor activities like walking.
Despite these concerns, the board of Education voted 3-1 in favor of the measure.
One board member voted no on the issue, explaining that the high-heel style of shoe was prejudice against men’s fashions. The fifth member abstained.
“Those boots are made for snapping,” Mr. Hosler said in celebration. “And that’s just what they’ll do.”
Congratulations, Perrysburg seniors, and Happy April Fools!
