Many people had binders full of Pokémon cards during elementary school days, for a while all anyone wanted to do is collect all the Pikachus and Charizards that they could. That came to an end though. As we grew older Pokémon cards got sold or shoved under beds and in closets for who knows how long,  But is Pokémon making a comeback?

Pokémon Go was the big mobile game release this summer, having been downloaded over 500 million times since it’s release, and though it has pretty much fallen out of the limelight at this point it did change the way people view the Pokémon world. Just one popular mobile game made even the world of Pokémon DS games, like

From pokemongolive.com, Pokémon Go has been downloaded over 500 million times.

Pokémon Sun and Moon released in November 2016 got a ton more interest than usual.

Before Pokémon Go was released there was little or no interest in Pokémon according to Google Trends. Since the game’s release this past June people’s interest in Pokémon has spiked. To show how large this spike in interest was, before last June the search interest was only 1% of what it hit this past summer.

Pokémon is still getting a pretty steady amount of searches and is most popular in Alaska and Hawaii. With the release of generation two Pokémon on Pokémon Go right around the corner, with a release date for 80 new Pokémon set later this week, the release of seven new baby Pokémon this past December has everyone waiting for more. The new baby Pokémon can be hatched from eggs and include Magby, Elekid, Cleffa, Igglypuff, Pichu, and Smoochum. People can’t help but wonder if the release of new Pokémon will make people become interested in the game again. Even the handful of people who have filled their Pokédex already will now have a reason to play the game once again with 80 new generation Pokémon on the way.

Screen shot from Pokémon Go app, “you’ll have the opportunity to catch more than 80 Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region.”

“Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, and many more Pokémon are nearly here! Starting later this week, you’ll have the opportunity to catch more than 80 Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games.”

This message released by The Pokémon Go Team released, February 15th, goes on to say that there will be more than 80 Pokémon, new evolutions and evolution items, new gameplay features such as new berries, and new avatars and an expanded wardrobe, all added this later in the week. Players can’t wait for the update and with the new features added gameplay will be completely different maybe making the game become a topic of interest again.

There have been a lot of big releases in the world of Pokémon. This past year Pokémon Go, Pokémon Sun and Moon, and even the recent release of the Pokémon Duel mobile game have made people nostalgic about their card collecting days, and have made everyone want to see what will happen next. What do you think, is Pokémon making a comeback?
